I’ve been getting worse at remembering dates (it’s part of growing old). Last week was the seventh anniversary of Because I’m Depressed! Hard to believe it’s already been this long. It’s been a fun and fruitful seven years, and I hope to continue making these comics for many more. Where will Because I’m Depressed be in another seven years? Who can say..?

On a more somber note, Smack Jeeves is shutting down for good, as many of you are already aware. After buying out the site last year and managing to drive away most of the viewers and creators with a plethora of unpopular changes to the platform, NHN has decided to cut their losses and will be closing the site for good on December 31st. This is not a surprising development, but it still really blows. I joined Smack Jeeves way back in 2006, and it introduced me to the world of webcomics, a world with seemingly boundless content to explore, a world where anyone who so desires can author their own comic and share it with others. It was on Smack Jeeves that I first launched Because I’m Depressed in 2013.

When I reminisce about Smack Jeeves, it won’t be about its ignominious final year. It will be to the warm and enthusiastic community I was able to be a part of. It will be to the creator-friendly and reader-friendly platform that allowed the site to flourish. It will be to the thousands of amateur artists like me who got their start on that site. It will be to the authors, the viewers, the commenters, the admins, the forum moderators, and everyone else who made it all possible.

So pour one out for Smack Jeeves. It will be dearly missed.

Previously, Because I'm Depressed had the somewhat-irregular update schedule of once every six days. Now, to give me a little more time to work on other projects, this comic will be updating once every seven days. In other words, every Tuesday.

The migration is almost finished. The only big thing remaining is the domain change, which should happen later this week.

If you have any questions for me, feel free to ask. And if you notice anything off about the site, let me know. I'm pretty sure I got the web design to where it needs to be, but there may be something I overlooked. It wouldn't be the first time.

I'm excited to host my webcomic here. A proper introduction is in order, but that will have to wait until later.

For now, I'll just give a little background: Because I'm Depressed is a comic I've hosted on Smack Jeeves for nearly six years. But SJ has come under new management, and they're doing away with a lot of the creator-friendly features that I loved about in order to make a more "streamlined", mobile-friendly, Webtoon/Tapas-esque platform. On top of that, they're also archiving the forums, eliminating private messages, and implementing some sort of monetization scheme. While I don't disagree with every change they're making, I do value the kind of friendly community and creative resources that are soon to be swept away from Smack Jeeves... which is why I was very happy to find these very things here on ComicFury!

So for the next week or so, I will be migrating my webcomic to this platform. As I have six years worth of strips to migrate, as well as a lot of web coding to rewrite, on top of other life obligations (work, sleep, drawing new strips), this will take a bit, so please be patient. I hope to have everything in working order by the end of next week, when the overhaul at Smack Jeeves is set to commence.
