@Merrsharr: ...what the? On top of the ridiculous assumption of assuming gender roles, I'm pretty sure there are more single fathers than there are gay male couples raising children?

@Merrsharr: Typically separate responsibilities by choice/expertise is the most efficient (due to personal, biological, biopsychological differences and cultural reinforcement), which is why it's more common, despite variety being the spice of life.
That said, while she's doing her best and a decent enough job, it's best if she doesn't presume, and I think her nervousness made her deal with Chel way too quickly.
She needs to have a sit-down and comfort her for at least a few minutes. That's hard as a Kindergarten teacher, but it's obviously upsetting Chel quite a bit.
